How to prepare for winter: guidance for VCSE organisations

December 2, 2024

As the autumn and winter months set in, we know how important it is for charities and community groups to prepare for unpredictable weather. That’s why Ladbrook Insurance, an independent insurance broker specialising in the VCSE sector, have put together some useful guidance for NAVCA members and their networks on protecting your organisation in the event of bad weather. Keep reading to find out more about the guidance.

In our latest guidance for NAVCA members, we have looked at some easy tips to help your organisation, volunteers and customer stay one step ahead to avoid the extra worry this winter. In the guide you will find: a winter checklist; information on the severe impact a burst pipe can have; the hazards of slips and trips around the building; and useful information on planning for disaster recovery.

The winter months are a time where charities and community groups can be at risk from adverse weather conditions, including storms, ice, snow and heavy rain. One aspect to consider is building safety – storms can disrupt not only the building itself, but activities that take place within it. The guidance covers property-related subjects, including building surveys and empty buildings.

The guidance also covers other winter risks, such as risks for drivers, frozen water pipes and other dangers. We encourage all charities and community groups to consider your safety and the safety of your communities before making any decisions or addressing any risks and hazards.

The guide has been produced by Ladbrook Insurance, using information drawn from many insurer sources. Ladbrook are an independent insurance broker, specialising and only working with charities, community and voluntary groups and social enterprises.
