Understanding risk management and insurance: free member support
May 18, 2022
Earlier this year, we were pleased to announce a new partnership between NAVCA and Ladbrook Insurance. Being aware of the risks faced by charities and community groups is a key part of supporting the local voluntary sector, which is why Ladbrook Insurance are offering all NAVCA members the chance to book training sessions for their local groups, either face to face or online. In this blog post, Tim Larden from Ladbrook Insurance explores the reasons for offering this training, and his experience working with charities.
At Ladbrook Insurance, we exclusively work with charities, community groups and social enterprises. This gives us a unique insight into the profile and needs of local groups, but also what can happen when things go wrong. The training sessions that we offer typically look at the common risks that charities and community groups face, using examples of real-life incidents that we’ve supported clients with, to bring the subject to life. But what are some of the risks faced by the voluntary and community sector, as seen by Ladbrook Insurance?
Data security and cyber risks are an increasing concern for all organisations, and an increasing number of groups are interested in specific risks from working with third parties. These risks range from hiring a facility to a more involved project collaboration. Some groups want to spend specific time on their events, making sure that insurance is in place to keep their community safe. Sometimes, people want to explore the risks of specific activities, with topics being everything from litter picking to using a bouncy castle. That’s why Ladbrook Insurance start our sessions by asking the delegates themselves which areas they would like to cover, meaning the support can be more personalised and as relevant as possible.
Once we have identified the concerns of the group during the training session, Ladbrook Insurance can provide resources and more detailed information on the particular topics. We look at how to assess risks, and who should be involved in that process. We also look at subjects that may often be overlooked, so organisations can make a thorough assessment and choose the appropriate insurance.
In recent years, the free courses that we offer have been well received and help answer a range of common questions that local groups have. At the NAVCA member event that we’re hosting on 24th October (12pm-1pm), we will give NAVCA members a taste of the content of these courses, as well as discussing some of the specific risks that local infrastructure organisations face. We encourage CEOs, finance and community development staff in particular to attend this session, and any other NAVCA members interested in insurance and supporting their local groups.
