Top tips to improve your charity’s website

For local infrastructure organisations and other charities, it’s important to have an up to date, accessible and engaging website, to make sure your communities can easily access support and information online. That’s why we’ve worked with Few and Far, a digital agency and B Corp specialising in working with not-for-profit organisations, to help NAVCA members improve your website’s performance this year.

In November, Few and Far hosted a workshop for NAVCA members, as part of our Barking Owl network for communications workers. Few and Far have completed over 180 free website audits for good causes through their Impact Optimiser programme, which NAVCA has also taken part in, giving them unique insights into the sector's digital challenges and opportunities. Keep reading to find out more about Few and Far’s top five website tips.

The big website issues charities are facing

Throughout their audits, Few and Far have identified somerecurring issues that consistently impact charities' online presence. These challenges with accessibility, choice overload, user journeys, and impact storytelling can be significant barriers to achieving your digital goals.

1. Make your content accessible

Accessible websites benefit everyone. To ensure everyone can engage with your content, use high-contrast colours, add meaningful alt text to images, create screen-reader-friendly content, and provide captions for videos. Not only is this more inclusive, but it also makes sure your support and information reach as many people as possible.

2. Avoid 'choice overload'

When websites try to do too much, it often leads to cluttered navigation and confused visitors. Simplify your menu, prioritise key user pathways, and clear out outdated content. A tidy, focused site will help people find what they need quickly.

3. Build better user journeys

Every visitor to your website has a purpose - whether they’re supporters, beneficiaries, volunteers, or funders. Make their journey through your site as smooth as possible by mapping out specific pathways, adding clear calls to action, and regularly testing and improving these routes. Analytics can help you understand how people interact with your site and spot areas for improvement.

4. Highlight your impact

Shout about your success! Use engaging images, clear graphics, and simple charts to help bring your impact stories to life. When visitors see the difference you’re making, they’re more likely to get involved and support your cause.

By focusing on these areas, you can create a welcoming, effective website that supports your organisation’s goals and helps your community thrive.
